‘Go Green’ Day
By: Lynette Lim

The condition of our environment these days is deteriorating at a rate that should concern us all. We often come across heart-breaking pictures of marine animals strangled by plastic waste, as well as news articles about how rubbish is dumped everywhere, turning our environment into one enormous, polluted garbage disposal site. It is fortunate that there are people who are concerned about nature and take active steps to overcome these detrimental issues before it becomes too late.

The ‘Go Green’ day is one such initiative, and I was fortunate to be able to take part in this campaign as it was held in the Multipurpose Hall in my neighbourhood, Taman Kota Masai, last Saturday. The Pasir Gudang City Council organised it with the aim of helping people learn about the environment. Members of the Taman Kota Masai community as well as the surrounding neighbourhoods came out in droves to attend the ‘Go Green’ day.

There were three main topics that the organisers had chosen to focus on that day. The first was protecting animals. It’s not just the marine animals that are in danger due to horrendous human habits – animals in our forests are under threat, too. We were taught about how we can play our part in ensuring that these animals are safe within their natural habitats. Next, we learnt a lot about plants. We were shown how to cultivate fruits, vegetables, and decorative plants within the confines of our small house gardens, as well as how to turn a profit by selling our produce. The final issue the City Council representatives touched on was dealing with rubbish. They demonstrated how to properly separate and dispose of the domestic waste a household typically produces, and the importance of proper handling of rubbish even at home.

Fun activities were also held to capture the interest of the attendees and drive home the lessons being taught that day. The first activity was a talk by an expert in animal husbandry. Dr Jalong, a veterinarian who owns and operates his own farm, brought along some of his animals like chickens, ducks, and even an incredibly sweet-natured donkey! Almost everyone was charmed by the cute four-legged animal. Dr Jalong talked about rearing chickens or ducks in an environment like our housing area, and the best practices to ensure healthy livestock. Next, we made a garden at the front of the Multipurpose Hall. The City Council representatives brought decorative and flowering shrubs, and educated us about suitable types of soil and amounts of sunlight for different types of plants. We had a lot of fun making new friends as we created the garden.

After completing the garden and washing our hands, we started recycling. The Pasir Gudang City Council had invited some officials from a non-governmental organisation called Zero Waste Malaysia to deliver a talk about how we can practice the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – in our daily lives. All participants had been required to bring recyclable items from home, and during this activity we learnt to properly separate our rubbish according to its categories, to be disposed of in the correct bins. Once we finished recycling, we had a reflection session where we were divided into groups. Everyone had to say a few words about what we learnt that day, and how we would put our lessons into practice.

I had a marvellous time during the ‘Go Green’ day. My best memory of the event was getting to pet the donkey that veterinarian had brought with him. I certainly hope to join this campaign again, and I think students should go to the ‘Go Green’ day next year as they would gain so much practical knowledge and learn to do their part in saving our environment.

‘Go Green’ Day
By _____(your name)_______

I took part in a ‘Go Green’ day in my local area. The aim was to help people learn about the environment. I have decided to write an article about the ‘Go Green’ day for my school magazine.

The ‘Go Green’ day was in SMK Kota Masai 2. It was held on Saturday, 11th January 2020. Mr Haji Rosland, principal of SMK Kota Masai 2, organised it. The teachers and students of SMK Kota Masai 2 were involved.

The first topic during the ‘Go Green’ day was protecting animals. The next topic was learning about plants. Another topic was dealing with rubbish.

There were a few ‘Go Green’ day activities. The first activity was a talk by an expert. The expert’s name was Dr Jalong, and he talked about animals. The next activity was making a garden. My friends and I made a garden and planted hibiscus, roses, and ferns. Then, we did a recycling activity. We separated rubbish into different categories – plastic, paper, glass and metal. One more activity was a gotong-royong to clean the school. The students were divided into groups to clean the corridors, canteen, and fish pond.

My best memory of the ‘Go Green’ day was working with my friends to clean the fish pond. I think students should go to the ‘Go Green’ day next year because we can gain a lot of knowledge about the environment.

(5 Ar, A, B, C, D, E) Captain Nobody Sample Question and Answer (1)

Form 5

5 Ariff, Amanah, Bijak, Cerdas, Dedikasi, Elit

Shalom and hi, kids!

I’m sure you must have been wondering why you were asked to memorise the brief synopsis and five important events for the Captain Nobody novel, right?

In this post is a sample question and answer. Copy the question and answer carefully, without making any mistakes.

When you copy the answers:
1. Read the answers carefully. Note how and where to use the brief synopsis and important events when writing your answer.
2. Highlight or underline the words in the question and in the answer with different colours, just like in this blog post. This shows you which part of the answer corresponds to the keywords in the question.

Tips :
รต Each answer should have an introduction and a conclusion.
รต The introduction should start with this sentence: The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford.  It should be followed by the brief synopsis. At the end of the introduction is your answer statement.
รต If you are asked to give reasons for your answer, try to provide at least three. Each reason must be supported by at least one important event. Choose a suitable important event based on the keywords given for each event.
รต Don’t forget to write a conclusion when you’re done. A simple conclusion is enough.

Question 1

Based on the novel you have studied, write about the most admirable character, and give reasons for your answer.

Answer

The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. This story is about Newton (Newt) Newman, who is a quiet, often-ignored 10-year-old boy who lives with his busy parents and football star brother, Chris. He loves his family very much and is a responsible and caring person. On Halloween, Newt’s best friends JJ and Cecil show prove their friendship by helping him make a costume, and he calls himself Captain Nobody. He becomes a superhero who does many brave things until his town acknowledges him as a courageous superhero. The most admirable character is Newton (Newt) Newman, also known as Captain Nobody. There are many reasons why I admire him.

The first reason why I admire Newt is he loves his family very much. Newt Newman prepares breakfast for his family every morning. He takes over from his mother when he catches her pouring milk into a bowl filled with strips of raw turkey. He scrambles a platter of eggs and cooks up some sausages, and makes coffee. He also reminds his mother about things that she forgets about because she is too busy. Newt also wakes his brother up to get ready for school. From this, we can see that Newt really loves his mother and doesn’t want her to be over-burdened, which is why he takes over from her to prepare breakfast even though he is only ten years old. I think it’s really commendable of him to help his mother make sure his family has food to eat in the morning before they go to school or work, and I am sure he does this because he loves them. Not many 10 year old children would volunteer to help like this out of love for their family, which makes it a reason why Newt is the most admirable character in this novel.

I admire the character of Newt as Captain Nobody the most in the novel because he is a really good friend. Captain Nobody gets a summons over his walkie-talkie. It was Cecil, asking Captain Nobody to meet him in an alley. Captain Nobody is reluctant to go at first, but in the end he goes to meet his sidekick and friend. He finds Cecil next to a Dumpster. Cecil asks Captain Nobody to climb the Dumpster to take down a big bass drum that has been left there. Initially, Captain Nobody hesitates because he is afraid of heights, but then Cecil says that Captain Nobody is fearless. This gives Captain Nobody the strength to cast aside his fears. He climbs the Dumpster and retrieves the bass drum for his friend, Cecil. In this event, we see that Captain Nobody is willing to face his fear of heights just to make his friend happy. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and Captain Nobody proves himself to be a real friend by helping his friend, Cecil. Not many of us are willing to face our fears to help our friends, which shows that Captain Nobody is truly an admirable character.

Finally, Captain Nobody is the most admirable character because he is brave. Newt happens to see a television showing news that Reggie Ratner has climbed the Appleton Water Tower and is about to commit suicide. It is said that Reggie is feeling depressed because everyone blames him for causing Chris Newman’s coma. Even though he doesn’t want to be Captain Nobody anymore, Newt knows that he has to rescue Reggie Ratner because he knows Reggie wasn’t the one who caused Chris’ coma. JJ and Cecil sneak out of school together with Newt, who quickly put on the Captain Nobody costume once more. At the water tower, his friends distract the police officer so that Captain Nobody could get to the ladder leading to the top of the water tower. Captain Nobody is afraid of heights, but he doesn’t want Reggie to jump off the tower, so he climbs the rusty ladder until he gets to the roof. There, he learns that Reggie wasn’t about to jump off. The older boy actually climbed the water tower to spray graffiti there, but his foot is now stuck in the rotten wood. Captain Nobody helps to free Reggie’s foot and helps him climb down the water tower. Captain Nobody, JJ, and Cecil become heroes in the eyes of the town for the daring and successful rescue.

Nelson Mandela once said, ‘The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.’ By this measure, Newt Newman, as Captain Nobody, is truly brave. He faces and overcomes his fear of heights to rescue someone who is not even a friend. Not many 17-year-old form 5 students like me would be brave enough to climb a water tower, much less a 10-year-old kid like Newt. This makes Newt Newman, also known as Captain Nobody, truly the most admirable character in the novel.

In conclusion, Newt Newman, also known as Captain Nobody, is the most admirable character in the novel because he loves his family, is a really good friend, and is a brave boy.

The first reason why I admire Newt is he loves his family very much. Newt Newman prepares breakfast for his family every morning. He also reminds his mother about things that she forgets about because she is too busy. Newt also wakes his brother up to get ready for school. In my opinion, Newt prepares breakfast for his family because he sees that his mother is busy and he wants to help her. He also wants his family to have food to eat. This shows that Newt loves his family very much.

Another reason why Newt is the most admirable character is he is a good friend. Initially, Captain Nobody hesitates because he is afraid of heights, but then Cecil says that Captain Nobody is fearless. This gives Captain Nobody the strength to cast aside his fears. He climbs the Dumpster and retrieves the bass drum for his friend, Cecil. I admire Captain Nobody because he is willing to fight his fear of heights to help his friend, Cecil. This proves that Newt is a very good friend.

The third reason why Newt is the most admirable character is he is very brave. Captain Nobody helps to free Reggie’s foot and helps him climb down the water tower. Captain Nobody, JJ, and Cecil become heroes in the eyes of the town for the daring and successful rescue. In this event, Captain Nobody proves that he is very brave to climb the water tower to rescue Reggie even though he is actually afraid of heights. I think this is very admirable of him.

In conclusion, Newt Newman, also known as Captain Nobody, is the most admirable character in the novel Captain Nobody.
