5 Ariff, Amanah, Bijak, Cerdas, Dedikasi,
Elit
Shalom and hi, kids!
I’m sure you must have been wondering why you were asked to
memorise the brief synopsis and five important events for the Captain Nobody
novel, right?
In this post is a sample question and answer. Copy the question
and answer carefully, without making any mistakes.
When you copy the answers:
1. Read the answers carefully. Note how and where to use the
brief synopsis and important events when writing your answer.
2. Highlight or underline the words in the question and in
the answer with different colours, just like in this blog post. This shows you
which part of the answer corresponds to the keywords in the question.
Tips :
õ Each answer should have an
introduction and a conclusion.
õ The introduction should start
with this sentence: The novel I have studied is Captain Nobody by Dean
Pitchford. It should be followed by the brief synopsis. At the end of the introduction is your answer statement.
õ If you are asked to give
reasons for your answer, try to provide at least three. Each reason must be
supported by at least one important event. Choose a suitable important event
based on the keywords given for each event.
õ Don’t forget to write a
conclusion when you’re done. A simple conclusion is enough.
Question 1
Based on the novel
you have studied, write about the most admirable character, and give reasons for your answer.
Answer
The novel I have
studied is Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. This story is about Newton (Newt)
Newman, who is a quiet, often-ignored 10-year-old boy who lives with his busy
parents and football star brother, Chris. He loves his family very much and is
a responsible and caring person. On Halloween, Newt’s best friends JJ and Cecil
show prove their friendship by helping him make a costume, and he calls himself
Captain Nobody. He becomes a superhero who does many brave things until his
town acknowledges him as a courageous superhero. The most admirable character is Newton (Newt) Newman, also known as Captain
Nobody. There are many
reasons why I admire him.
The first reason why I admire Newt is he loves his family very much. Newt Newman prepares breakfast for
his family every morning. He takes over from his mother when he catches her
pouring milk into a bowl filled with strips of raw turkey. He scrambles a
platter of eggs and cooks up some sausages, and makes coffee. He also reminds
his mother about things that she forgets about because she is too busy. Newt
also wakes his brother up to get ready for school. From this, we can see that
Newt really loves his mother and doesn’t want her to be over-burdened, which is
why he takes over from her to prepare breakfast even though he is only ten
years old. I think it’s really commendable of him to help his mother make sure
his family has food to eat in the morning before they go to school or work, and
I am sure he does this because he loves them. Not many 10 year old children
would volunteer to help like this out of love for their family, which makes it a reason why Newt is the most admirable
character in this novel.
I admire the character of Newt as Captain Nobody the most in the novel
because he is a really good
friend. Captain Nobody gets a summons over his walkie-talkie. It was
Cecil, asking Captain Nobody to meet him in an alley. Captain Nobody is
reluctant to go at first, but in the end he goes to meet his sidekick and
friend. He finds Cecil next to a Dumpster. Cecil asks Captain Nobody to climb
the Dumpster to take down a big bass drum that has been left there. Initially,
Captain Nobody hesitates because he is afraid of heights, but then Cecil says
that Captain Nobody is fearless. This gives Captain Nobody the strength to cast
aside his fears. He climbs the Dumpster and retrieves the bass drum for his
friend, Cecil. In this event, we see that Captain Nobody is willing to face his fear of heights just
to make his friend happy. A friend in need is a friend indeed, and
Captain Nobody proves himself to be a real friend by helping his friend, Cecil.
Not many of us are willing to face our fears to help our friends, which shows
that Captain Nobody
is truly an admirable
character.
Finally, Captain Nobody is the most admirable character because he is brave. Newt happens to
see a television showing news that Reggie Ratner has climbed the Appleton Water
Tower and is about to commit suicide. It is said that Reggie is feeling
depressed because everyone blames him for causing Chris Newman’s coma. Even
though he doesn’t want to be Captain Nobody anymore, Newt knows that he has to
rescue Reggie Ratner because he knows Reggie wasn’t the one who caused Chris’
coma. JJ and Cecil sneak out of school together with Newt, who quickly put on the
Captain Nobody costume once more. At the water tower, his friends distract the
police officer so that Captain Nobody could get to the ladder leading to the
top of the water tower. Captain Nobody is afraid of heights, but he doesn’t
want Reggie to jump off the tower, so he climbs the rusty ladder until he gets
to the roof. There, he learns that Reggie wasn’t about to jump off. The older
boy actually climbed the water tower to spray graffiti there, but his foot is
now stuck in the rotten wood. Captain Nobody helps to free Reggie’s foot and
helps him climb down the water tower. Captain Nobody, JJ, and Cecil become
heroes in the eyes of the town for the daring and successful rescue.
Nelson Mandela once said, ‘The brave
man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.’ By this
measure, Newt Newman, as
Captain Nobody, is truly
brave. He faces and overcomes his fear of heights to rescue someone who
is not even a friend. Not many 17-year-old form 5 students like me would be
brave enough to climb a water tower, much less a 10-year-old kid like Newt.
This makes Newt Newman,
also known as Captain Nobody, truly the most admirable character in the novel.
In conclusion, Newt Newman, also known as
Captain Nobody, is the
most admirable character in the novel because he loves his family, is a really good friend, and is a
brave boy.
